Preserve the experience before trying to explain it.

Your first job is not to name the object. It is to protect what you remember, separate direct observation from interpretation, and record what can still be checked.

  1. 01

    Protect the first record

Write or record your account in your own words. Save original files before cropping, enhancing, forwarding, or renaming them.

  2. 02

    Record what can be checked

Note date, local time, location, direction, duration, weather, sound, apparent motion, shape, lights, and nearby reference points.

Time and place recorded Sketch or reference points added
  3. 03

    Separate seeing from interpreting

Make two lists: what reached your senses and what you think it may have meant. Keep later memories and other people’s accounts labeled separately.

    Observation list made Interpretations labeled
  4. 04

    Test alternatives fairly

Check aircraft, satellites, stars and planets, balloons, drones, atmospheric effects, reflections, image artifacts, and intentional deception where relevant.

Ordinary causes checked Contradictions and missing data noted
  5. 05

    Stop where the evidence stops

State the strongest conclusion the record supports. “Unresolved” and “insufficient data” are legitimate outcomes; neither means alien.
